Proofreading is the final editing step and is done after the manuscript has been formatted. An unformatted manuscript cannot be proofread.

Proofreading checks for errors in formatting and textual errors that formatting may have introduced. This includes:
-
Checking headers and footers
-
Checking for added, deleted or repeated text
-
Making sure there are no distracting white spaces, bad breaks, orphans or widows
-
Making sure the styles of headings, text, footnotes and endnotes are correctly and consistently applied
-
Checking that images, figures, charts and captions are correct

Proofreading also provides a final check of the text, correcting major errors in spelling and grammar as well as deviations from the style guide.
Proofreading is done in Adobe Reader using the comment tools.
